WNC FireWood Ministry

WNC FireWood is a joint ministry of First United Methodist Church and the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Our mission is simple: to provide neighbors in need with free home‑heating firewood.

We receive donated hardwood logs, cut them into rounds, split and season the firewood for at least six months, and then distribute it to local households who need help heating their homes.

We currently operate from two donated facilities:

• A production woodlot in the Little River community

• A Distribution Center on the First United Methodist Church property

Ways to Get Involved

There are many ways members of our congregation can serve through WNC FireWood:

• Support communication, public relations, and volunteer coordination

• Serve as an attendant at the Distribution Center (training provided)

• Join a work team at the production woodlot

• Help with chainsaw and splitter operations (training and safety required and provided)

• Drive a truck, pull a trailer, or help with loading and delivery

Rather than holding regular meetings, WNC FireWood organizes work teams as needs arise. All can help —there is a role for everyone.

Supporting the Ministry

Our operating expenses are funded by our sponsoring congregations and individual donors. Capital improvements have been supported by the First United Methodist Church Foundation, Lake Toxaway United Methodist Church, St. Philip’s Episcopal Church Women, the St. Philip’s Foundation, and generous individual donors.

Donations may be made through our sponsoring churches or directly to WNC FireWood Inc. (a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit).

We are grateful for additional partnerships with Bartlett Tree Experts, Bread of Life, the Department of Social Services, El Centro, Pisgah Land Solutions, the Salvation Army, Sharing House, and Stewards of Amazing Grace.
